We build a small core of high-quality biochar directly around the seed, then add a protective outer layer that shields it from birds, wind and drying out. The biochar core works like a sponge and a shelter at the same time — it holds water after rain or watering, buffers nutrients from the surrounding soil, and offers a home for beneficial microbes that help the young root system get established.

Around the biochar core, we can also add one or more “fertiliser levels” – thin layers enriched with minerals, organic nutrients or microbial boosters that release slowly as the seedling grows. This lets us tune each SeedBall to the exact needs of the species and the site: for example, extra phosphorus for young roots, more potassium for stress tolerance, or very low-input mixes for nutrient-sensitive habitats. For every project we can choose the best combination of core, coatings and fertiliser levels to match soil type, moisture, and plant requirements, so each seed arrives in the field already paired with its ideal support system.

This technology really shines where every single plant matters. Biochar-core SeedBalls are ideal for trees, shrubs, deep-rooted perennials and larger grasses that you don’t want to waste by broadcasting in clumps. Because each ball contains exactly one seed, you can dose them with high precision by hand, with simple spreaders or even with drone seeders, getting predictable spacing and much less seed loss. That makes them perfect for agroforestry rows, restoration projects, dikes, field margins or any place where you want strong, well-placed individuals rather than random patches.

Compared with classic seedballs or loose seed, biochar-core SeedBalls offer higher resilience under stress. The micro-environment around each seed softens the impact of dry spells and poor soils, helping roots dive deeper and faster once germination starts. In practice this means better survival rates, less re-sowing and more uniform stands of trees and perennials, especially in challenging sites where conventional sowing struggles.
